This unit engages students in understanding ocean ecosystems, the impact of pollution, and ways to care for marine life through integrated activities across ELA, math, science, social studies, art, and physical education. Students take an “Ocean Helper Pledge,” create graphs of favorite sea creatures, and conduct a pollution cleanup experiment to see firsthand the difficulty of restoring polluted waters. Social studies lessons connect environmental stewardship to civic responsibility through planning a beach cleanup or recycling activity. Art and movement are incorporated through an ocean diorama/mural project and themed yoga. Ongoing activities—such as reading ocean-themed books, keeping an Ocean Journal, and observing local coastal conditions—deepen learning over time.
