Ocean Journey Week #5
This unit immerses students in the fascinating world of the deep ocean, combining literacy, math, science, social studies, art, and physical movement. Students explore unique deep-sea creatures such as anglerfish, vampire squid, and jellyfish through read-alouds, descriptive writing, and creative drawing. Math activities focus on sequencing and ordering animals by ocean depth, while science lessons introduce bioluminescence through hands-on glow experiments. Social studies connections are made by examining past and present ocean exploration tools like submarines and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). Creative arts projects allow students to design glowing deep-sea creatures, and physical education is integrated with a submarine obstacle course. Throughout the unit, students maintain an Ocean Journal, engage with ocean-themed literature, and participate in sensory and observational activities. The unit culminates with an Ocean Diorama or “Ocean Expert” book presentation, and may conclude with a celebratory field trip to an aquarium or marine science center. This integrated approach builds curiosity, scientific understanding, creativity, and communication skills while strengthening family connections through at-home extension activities.
