This Marine Mammals & Ocean Conservation Unit introduces young learners to dolphins, manatees, whales, and the concept of protecting marine environments. Through integrated ELA, math, science, social studies, art, and PE lessons, students compare and contrast marine mammals using Venn diagrams, explore measurement by comparing manatee sizes to familiar objects, and learn how whales breathe through hands-on simulations. Social studies lessons highlight marine protected areas and why rules exist to help animals. Creative activities include sculpting dolphins and manatees from clay and practicing dolphin-like leaps in PE. Ongoing activities such as daily ocean-themed reading, maintaining an ocean journal, and observing coastal conditions reinforce concepts over time. The unit culminates with a choice of projects—a diorama, “Ocean Expert” book, or celebration event—and may include an aquarium or marine center field trip to bring learning to life.
